The Mercer County Cheerleading Squad is headed to state finals as a co-ed squad.

This didn’t seem like a possibility just a couple of months ago, when we first reported on the team.

Mac Guay was the team’s only male cheerleader.

Guay and his teammates say they were told he couldn’t compete with the squad at competitions because you had to have at least two males to qualify in the co-ed division.

Guay said he would like to cheer in college and would miss out on scouts seeing him if he couldn’t be in competitions.

However, Guay’s mom said another young man has agreed to join the squad so they can compete in the co-ed division.

The state competition is in December.
