The Kentucky State Fire Marshal is urging Kentuckians to change the batteries in their smoke detectors when setting clocks back from Daylight Savings Time.

State Fire Marshal William Swopes says smoke detectors are the first line of defense in a fire, and if a detector isn't working, it could be the difference in whether or not you escape from a fire.

Swopes says fire detectors should be on every floor of a home, including the basement, and in each sleeping room.
