A Franklin County Sheriff's Deputy was saved by his bullet-proof vest, but it wasn't from a bullet.

The Sheriff's Office said the deputy was responding to a call when his cruiser hit black ice on Evergreen Road Monday night.

The deputy lost control of his cruiser and crashed through a wood farm fence.

A wood plank crashed through the front windshield of the cruiser and hit the deputy in the chest.

Investigators said the vest saved the deputy from serious injury or perhaps even death.

The deputy, who declined ABC 36's request for an interview, was expected to return to work by the end of the week, according to the Sheriff's Office.
