Lexington Police warned the community Tuesday about home improvement scams.

Police said many of the scams target senior citizens and involve repairs to roofs, gutters, chimneys and driveways.

Some residents may be offered 'special deals' because the contractor has material left over from another job.

Investigators said to beware of unsolicited contractors who claim that your home needs repair work for damage that you have never noticed.

Also, police said homeowners should never agree to have work done on the spot.

The department said it's important to get at least two written estimates from reputable companies.

Research the companies through the Better Business Bureau, local licensing authorities or banks and suppliers.

And police said you should never pay more than one-third of the total cost of the job in advance.
