Beshear: Pills "Killing Our People"

Governor Steve Beshear is calling for a coordinated effort to fight Kentucky's prescription pill epidemic.
Governor Steve Beshear joined other state leaders Monday, to push for a coordinated effort against prescription pill abuse.

The governor says this affects everybody, even people not involving with drugs.

"The rising abuse of prescription drugs are literally killing our people," the governor said at the capitol. "It's causing pain and misery in our families. It's robbing our economy of productive workers. It's filling our jails, our hospitals, and our treatment centers. And it's draining our state budget of resources that could be used to find classrooms, put police on our streets, and create jobs."

Two specific bills were discussed Monday. One requires all doctors to use Kentucky's prescription monitoring system. The other would require all pain management clinics to be owned by physicians.
