Governor Steve Beshear had ordered a feasibility study about adding the University of Pikeville to the state's public university system.

It's a private university right now. In a statement, the governor says he wants to know if existing universities are meeting the needs of eastern Kentucky. Some who support adding Pikeville to the system say the region needs a school closer than Morehead State University and Eastern Kentucky University.

The governor says the University of Pikeville's growth shows its potential as an economic force, but it's necessary to weigh all the issues.
