Berea Fire Fighters Mourning Loss of Their Own

A Berea Fire Fighter dies after colliding with a freight train in Rockcastle County Friday morning.
The Berea Fire Department and Mount Vernon Fire Department lost one of their own Friday morning.

29-year-old Christopher Kerns was killed after his 2008 Chevy pickup truck collided with a CSX Freight Train just outside Mount Vernon.

Kerns works at both the Berea and Mount Vernon Fire Departments.

The Rockcastle County Coroner pronounced Kerns dead at the scene.

According to investigators Kerns failed to stop at a railroad crossing. The train hit the passenger side of his truck and pushed him almost 100 feet until it came to rest against a rail tunnel.

The city of Berea has lowered all their flags at half staff, and the fire department has placed a black patch over their logo and badges, all in honor of Kerns.

No funeral arraignments had been made for Kerns as of 11pm Friday evening.
