It's that time of year again. Back-to-school shopping is in full swing, which means it's time to open up your wallet for supplies.

Consumer Reports has released a list of ten easy tips to save on basic supplies for the new school year.

1. Gather Supplies You Already Have
Check and see what supplies you have left over from last year. Chances are you will find pencils, paper, and pens that have never been used.

2. Stick To The List
Only buy supplies that are required by your child's school. You can check the school's website for the list. Stores often have them on the end of aisles as well. Consumer reports also suggests buying folders that are on sale, and not putting out the extra money for ones with characters on them.

3. Learn Regular Retail Prices
Once you've narrowed down what you need to buy, make a list of regular retail prices so you can confirm when something's really on sale.

4. Nab loss leaders
Between mid-July and the start of school, many retailers promote loss leaders. i.e. notebooks 10 for a dollar, a bag of pencils  for a dime, and so forth.

5. Use Coupons
Clip coupons from weekly newspaper inserts and download them from company websites.

6. Join Rewards Programs
They're free to belong and offer you discounted prices on featured items throughout the store.

7. Price Match
Shop at stores that will match any competitor's lowest price. That way it will save you the headache of running around town to find the lowest price on items your child needs.

8. Watch For Special Events
Many stores will offer one-day deals with downloaded apps. i.e. Gap, Aeropostale, and H&M.

9. Shop at Unexpected Places
Consignment shops often have their best merchandise this time of year. Also try discount shops for pens, pencils, etc.

10. Work The Web
Turn to the internet for special deals and discount codes. You'll also find an endless variety of items your child really needs.
