In November, 2012 Kentuckians can choose to reelect Mitch McConnell, or vote for somebody else.

But who will be that other choice?  Leading Democrats have not entered the race.

Two weeks ago environmental lawyer Tom FitzGerald says somebody with campaign experience encouraged him to run.

FitzGerald calls getting asked to run an honor, and he wants to test the waters.

"I'm at the point of maybe taking off my shoe dipping the big toe in," said FitzGerald.

He says it would be a privilege to represent Kentucky in the Senate, but first, he wants to speak with Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes.

"That's a conversation I need to have with her regarding what her intentions are.
'Would you get out of the way if she was interested?'
That's a conversation that I want to have with her.  I think that it would be premature to speculate on whether that would be a deciding factor," said FitzGerald.

McConnell's raised a reported $12 million for his reelection campaign.

"Yea, it's a little daunting isn't it?" Asked Fitzgerald.

But he says some battles are worth fighting.

"That would be a significant fundraising challenge, but I think that there's very little enthusiasm for more of the same.

Recently an audio recording came out from a McConnell campaign meeting.

On the tape, McConnell aids call Ashley Judd, "Emotionally unbalanced."

Fitzgerald says if people broke the law recording the meeting, they should be prosecuted, but...

"I don't know that the folks that were part of that conversation really deserve a pass.  Sitting around  considering politics of kind of personal destruction as a way of maintaining office," said FitzGerald.

He says he plans to decide by mid-May.  FitzGerald says he would take a leave from the nonprofit, Kentucky Resources Council, if he challenges McConnell.
