Amazon.com Bringing More Than A Thousand Jobs To Winchester

Winchester's Mayor says Amazon will open its largest Customer Service center in the world in Winchester.
The country received a bleak jobs report Friday morning, but Winchester is bucking national trends, and adding hundres of new full-time jobs.

Winchester's Mayor says Amazon.com will open its largest customer service call center in the world in Winchester.

The company plans to add about 1,100 jobs, with more than 500 being full-time positions with benefits.

The news has the whole town buzzing.

"We were all ecstatic. This community, like a lot of communities, needs jobs real badly, and we were glad that a company like Amazon.com was going to be partnering up," said James Tipton, owner of the 96 Truck Stop.

Tipton expects to get more customers when the customer service center opens. His business sits about a mile down the road from the planned site.

"It will benefit our restaurant. We're the only full service restaurant within the industrial park," said Tipton.

The city is thrilled with the economic development, but officials are hungry for even more jobs.

"We've been pretty aggressive at trying to pursuit any number of jobs whether it's 1, 10, 100. It's great, but we're not where we need to be. We're not where we want to be, and we're not going to take our foot of the pedal so to speak," said Ed Burtner, Winchester's Mayor.

Amazon set up a temporary site in town two weeks ago. The permanent facility is expected to open in 12-18 months. They are currently conducting job interviews.
