A Lexington community said farewell Friday to a 300-year-old friend.

An oak tree on Spurr Road that had become something of a landmark is now gone.

Officials said it was leaning too far over the road and could be dangerous for drivers.

An arborist said the tree was hollow inside, and only barely hanging on.

Spurr Road was closed down for about three hours while crews took it down.
