At least 19 people are dead and hundreds more are injured in Kentucky after severe storms and tornadoes Friday. Red Cross volunteers and Central Kentucky firefighters are among the search and rescue crews in West Liberty.

In Laurel County, 70 miles south of Lexington, 5 deaths were reported by mid-morning.

Several homes were destroyed in East Bernstadt were many families desperately tried to take cover Friday night when the storms hit.

Gov. Steve Beshear and Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson toured the hardest-hit areas of the state Saturday.

Beshear called up 275 Ky. National Guard troops to help in storm-ravaged communities.

He also declared a statewide emergency.

The storms also killed 14 people in Indiana, 3 in Ohio and 1 in Alabama.
