If the kids are not on summer break yet, they will be shortly, and many of us will be hitting the road or hopping a plane for a trip, but you don't want your summer vacation cut short by illness.
Travel experts say the stress associated with planning and preparing for a trip can sometimes compromise your immune system.
When you finally travel, the stresses of not sleeping well, changing time zones and traveling at odd hours takes a toll.
Experts say diet plays a role, too. We typically don't eat well or hydrate well enough when we travel, which can compromise our immune system.
It's also important to make sure you're getting the right amount of vitamins in your diet before your trip. Vitamins C and A can strengthen the immune system.
To help decrease your chances of getting sick during your travel, be sure to bring along some hand sanitizer.
"You may not be able to wash your hands when you want to. So, if you can't get to soap and water when you have to have clean hands, you can use your hand sanitizer. The other is even though you have the opportunity to wash your hands with soap and water, you're still touching many things that other people have touched also and that's how you can somehow be exposed to bacteria or viruses," said Cleveland Clinic Travel Health Specialist Dr. Brenda Powell.
Dr. Powell says it's good to use a little hand sanitizer after touching things like handrails, doorknobs, or other communal things.
