Résumé should be the Functional style
· DO - Use a functional style resume that lists areas such as education, job skills, transferable skills, certifications and memberships. Rather than documenting a chronological work history.
· DO - Check out websites or books to see how functional résumés look.
Make your résumé visually appealing.
· DO - Keep it to ONE page.
· DO - Use a simple font such as Times Roman and no smaller than a 10 font size.
· DON’T- Be repetitive.
· DO - Save as a WORD document so the employer can easily open it when attached to an email or posted online.
No Mistakes Allowed - Any flaws on the résumé can prevent you from getting an interview.
· DO - Always use spell-check and proofread for misspellings that spell-check may miss. (such as: form instead of from).
· DO - Have someone else look at your résumé to check for mistakes before sending it out.
Don’t Undervalue Yourself on Your Resume
· Education and Transferable Skills show your ability to function well in any work place.
· Find key words that describe what you are capable of doing.
· Never say anything negative about yourself on your résumé.
· Never mention salary expectations on the résumé.
Don’t Lie on Your Résumé!!
· Mistruths on the résumé can and usually do come to the surface in the interview or can get you fired once hired.
· It’s okay to admit that you don’t know something.
· Instead emphasize your ability to learn new things quickly.
