This Day in Sports - December 7th

Start it off with Auburn's Bo Jackson in 1985...who edged out Iowa's Chuck Long by just 45 points to win the Heisman Trophy.  It was a record-setting day in Heisman voting...the lowest point victory in the history of the award.  Jackson rushed for 1,786 yards and 17 touchdowns that season...averaging a career-high 6.6 yards per carry.

Jackson went on to have an amazing sports career in professional football as well as baseball.  And just trust me when I say that "Bo Knows" both.

Shawn Bradley, BYU's 7'6" monster (he was in Space Jam....his powers went to the blue alien guy...goofy and says, "Hey little piggy.") blocked 14 shots against who?  The Eastern Kentucky Colonels.  Sorry EKU was (and still is) tied for an NCAA record for blocked shots in a game.  The Cougars won that game 90-86.  But for Colonel's Bradley getting dunked on left and right in the NBA...why was he in Space Jam again?  Who would steal his power of slowness?

Nine-time NBA first-teamer Larry Bird (a 3-time MVP) was born (1956).  Bird led the Boston Celtics to 3 NBA crowns.  but what I remember is the on-going battle between Bird and Magic Johnson...that sparked an interest in basketball...leading to Michael Jordan, Kobe and LeBron greatness...without this...I'm not sure basketball is the same.  They battled in college at Indiana State/Michigan State and took it to the pros...Celtics vs. Lakers!  How could it get any better?  This awesome NBA Jam Session video...that's how!

Hall-of-famer Johnny Bench, the Cincinnati institution at catcher, was the Reds' rock...leading the "Big Red Machine" in the mid-1970s.

That's all folks!  Check back again soon for more "This Day" fun!
