Just about everyone enjoys getting a gift card to their favorite stores. The Better Business Bureau of Central and Eastern Kentucky has heard from consumers who received a text message on their cell phones that said they had won a gift card as a thank you for visiting Walmart's Web site. The text message gave a number to call to claim a free $200 Walmart Gift Card Voucher. Some consumers reported that since they had logged on to Walmart's Web site at some point, so they assumed the text message was legitimate. But there's a catch. One consumer told the BBB that when she called the number in the text message, she was told she needed to give a bank account or credit card number to pay just a few dollars for "shipping and handling." It didn't sound right to the woman so she said, "No thanks." She did the right thing. If you have won a prize, it is illegal to require you to pay anything to get it. Walmart is not behind this text message in any way. While Walmart may sometimes offer a chance to win free gift cards as a prize for completing a customer survey offered through a receipt from the store, they would NEVER ask you for financial information. Beware of text messages from unknown sources and don't follow any hyperlinks offered in them. Check out any suspicious phone or text messages with your BBB. You can call the BBB of Central and Eastern Kentucky toll-free at 1-800-866-6668 or online at www.bluegrass.bbb.org. If you have to pay to get a prize, Don't Fall For It.
